Dispute resolution

We are a member of the ECRCS. If you make a complaint and are unhappy with our final response you can refer your dispute to the relevant conciliation service. These organisations independently review disputes with no additional cost to you. The conciliation service can only help with disputes involving a ‘cross-border’ rental transaction occurring within the European Union or UK – you must be a resident of the EU or UK and the rental must have taken place in a different EU country.

The amount of the pre-authorisation taken on pick-up of the rental vehicle is calculated as follows:
 
The vehicle rental price* + €200** MINUS any sum you have already paid when making a “Pay Now” booking. 
 
* The "vehicle rental price" includes the vehicle rental cost and all optional extras you’ve requested, calculated at the start of the rental based on the intended length of the rental. For the avoidance of any doubt, any “Pay at Location” amount you owe in relation to the vehicle rental (including any optional extras) will be included as part of the pre-authorisation and will be charged to you at the end of the rental (using the card provided for the purposes of the pre-authorisation, unless agreed otherwise).
 
** If you buy our “Fuel Up Front” product, we will reduce the €200 by the amount we charge you for the “Fuel Up Front” product
 
The €200 is included as part of the pre-authorisation in case we have to charge you at the end of the rental for any of the following: 
 
i.    costs to refuel the vehicle (where relevant); 
ii.    additional rental charges in circumstances where you fail to return the vehicle or any optional extras at the end of the agreed rental period [or to the agreed return location]; 
iii.    any additional charges or fines you incur relating to your use of the vehicle (which we have been notified of prior to you returning the vehicle, which will include, for example, charges relating to traffic violations); and/or 
iv.    costs incurred as a result of exceeding any relevant mileage restrictions. 

Where the pre-authorisation we take does not cover the charges you incur, we will request you make a further payment for the additional amounts owed.

We consider your rental a long-term hire if the rental period is at least 28 days.

In case you would like to extend further, we need to open a new rental period with a new rental agreement number.

Our Rental Operations Team will contact you via SMS before the original check in date to ask how long you wish to extend the rental. In the SMS you can find a secure website link where you can add the return date and the current total mileage reading of the hire car in order to extend the rental. (If you already have a new reservation number for the next period, you can add this information as well on the site).

Our Team will process the extension as soon as possible, however for technical reasons, only after the due date of the rental.

In case you would like to discuss your rental extension, you can send us an email or call us during working hours (Monday-Friday 9 AM – 4 PM, CET time +01:00), please make sure including your rental agreement number or the plate number of the car in your email or have this data available before the call.

You can register for QuickPass from the moment you’ve booked your car. You just need your driving licence and a payment card to hand.

If you don’t have that info, you can register for QuickPass right up until you pick up your rental vehicle.

After booking:

  • Click the 'register for QuickPass' link on the confirmation page, or use the link in the confirmation email;
  • Provide your driving licence and payment details;
  • Tailor your rental with any extras you require.

Don’t worry, we’ll send you a few reminders by email should you forget.

You only need Continental Cover if you travel from the UK. If you wish to drive abroad from your original rental location, it is a good idea to check the location specific conditions for the destination country.

Should you need to cancel a prepaid booking that was made directly with us, we are waiving cancellation fees as long as the booking is cancelled up to 48 hours prior to the day your rental begins. If you cancel your reservation through our website, at any point prior to the day of rental itself, your refund will be processed in full immediately and should reach your account within 10 days. To amend or cancel an existing booking, you can manage your booking here.

Please note that should you cancel less than 48 hours before your rental is due to begin, you will receive a full refund minus the lower of i) 2 days of your booking or ii) a fixed fee depending on the country you booked in (DKK 485, NOK 645, SEK 693, £ 60, € 65, CHF 76).  If you do not cancel and fail to show up, no refund will be provided and a fee may apply.

For "pay on collection" or "pay later" bookings, there will be no cancellation fees up until the time the rental is due to begin.

You don't need to worry about paying for the Dartford Crossing as most of our vehicles from nearby locations are pre-registered with the Dartford Authority. This means that you don't need to do anything extra, we will take payment for the crossings from the payment card used on the rental.
 


Unfortunately, you would not be able to collect your vehicle if our office is closed. However, if your flight number is present in your booking, we'll be aware of any delay to your flight and will endeavour to keep the vehicle for you. It's imperative you provide your flight number when you book, otherwise we have no way of knowing if your flight is delayed.

Pets are allowed in our vehicles with prior agreement from the store you intend to hire from. However, if a vehicle is returned with a messy interior beyond normal levels of wear and tear, it will need valeting so a cleaning charge will be added. This charge varies by location. Dispute resolution

We are a member of the ECRCS. If you make a complaint and are unhappy with our final response you can refer your dispute to the relevant conciliation service. These organisations independently review disputes with no additional cost to you. The conciliation service can only help with disputes involving a ‘cross-border’ rental transaction occurring within the European Union or UK – you must be a resident of the EU or UK and the rental must have taken place in a different EU country.

If you have already made a booking, but it is impacted by a quarantine measure or other travel restrictions due to the Coronavirus, this booking can be modified or cancelled as outlined below:

Should you need to cancel a prepaid booking that was made directly with us, we are waiving cancellation fees as long as the booking is cancelled up to 48 hours prior to the day your rental begins. If you cancel your reservation through our website, at any point prior to the day of rental itself, your refund will be processed in full immediately and should reach your account within 10 days. To amend or cancel an existing booking, you can manage your booking here.

Please note that should you cancel within 48 hours or on the day the rental is due to begin, you will receive a full refund minus the lower of i) 2 days of your booking or ii) a fixed fee depending on the country you booked in (DKK 485, NOK 645, SEK 693, £ 60, € 65, CHF 76).  If you do not cancel and fail to show up, no refund will be provided and a fee may apply.

For “pay on collection” or “pay later” bookings, there will be no cancellation fees up until the time the rental is due to begin.

Yes, if you have Personal Accident Insurance. It also covers you and your passengers if you’re injured in an accident, plus any damage to your personal belongings. Personal Accident Insurance isn’t automatically included with your rental, but you can purchase it over the counter when you collect your hire vehicle. The cost varies depending where you hire your vehicle.  Before you take out Personal Accident Insurance, it’s worth also finding out whether your existing travel insurance already covers you.

To hire a car in Denmark, you need to be at least 19 years of age at the moment of collecting the vehicle and have held a driving licence for at least one year. A higher minimum age limit may apply to certain vehicles.

If you or your additional drivers are under the age of 25, you'll need to pay an extra fee per day. The amount depends on where you hire a car, because the law and insurance terms vary between countries, but you can expect it to be around 100 DKK per day per driver. If the location charges a premium fee, it could cost more. The minimum age you can hire a car also varies from country to country. Under the age of 25, you can hire cars from Group A, Group B, Group C, Group E, and Group I for example. Check out our fleet to find further information about specific categories. 

There is currently no age maximum, so long as you have had a full, valid, licence for at least 1 year. Check the location specific terms and conditions for the country you are renting for more information on age requirements.

Your invoice is calculated based on the items presented on your rental agreement at the beginning of your hire.  An estimated amount is presented to you for your acceptance, so please carefully review this document prior to leaving the station with your vehicle.

Your invoice will also contain any applicable additional charges such as refuelling, damage repair costs, or additional days' fees.

We understand this is a common concern. When you collect your hire car, we will check it and mark any existing damage on your rental agreement or vehicle condition report. You then sign this to confirm you are satisfied. Rest assured, we will never charge you for any damage that already existed. You will not be charged for any small scuffs and dents you pick up during your journey, as we understand this is normal wear and tear for any vehicle. These are:

  • Panel – abrasions or surface scratches less than 25mm (1inch)
  • Panel – dents less than 25mm (1inch)
  • Panel – paint stone chips (no dent) less than 3mm.
  • Glass chips less than 3mm.
  • Wheels/scratches less than 25mm
  • Interior/seat tears/burns less than 3mm, carpet tears/burns less than 10mm

If further damage was caused to the hire car during your rental, you will be charged in line with industry standards using estimating tools such as Audatex. In the case of any damage, we will charge the total repair costs up to the excess amount, which was agreed at the time of your rental contract unless there was a breach of our terms and conditions.

Yes, if the vehicle has been involved in an accident or has sustained damage you must report the accident to the police immediately and to us within 48 hours, even if no third party was involved.

Unfortunately no, the name on the rental agreement, the "named" or "main" driver, must remain as it has been reserved.  Should the main driver be unable to drive the vehicle or pick up the reservation, the rental must be cancelled and re-booked under the new designated name at current pay at location rates.  Please note that for any cancelled reservations there may be cancellation fees as set out in our booking terms and conditions

If the rental has already begun, you may wish to add an additional driver so that another individual can drive the vehicle, however the named driver cannot be changed.

If you cannot find your rental car keys, please first call our agents at the rental agency (listed on your rental documentation) and report the lost keys. Usually, we have a spare key for vehicles in a central storage location, which is then ordered for you by the agency.

Additionally, there may also be times when we need to have the rental car towed by a breakdown service if the keys cannot be secured otherwise.

You will be responsible for any loss or damage to the rental car keys. The amount of these costs depends on the country of rental. Costs resulting from loss of keys, such as towing service and replacement of the keys, must be paid by the customer.

Smoking is strictly prohibited inside all of our vehicles. If we believe that someone has smoked inside the car during the rental period, an additional charge will be applied to cover our added specialist cleaning costs.

If, on the other hand, at the beginning of your rental you notice a cigarette smell, please let the station know and we will provide you with a new vehicle.

We offer theft protection with all our hire vehicles to assist in the event of all or part of your hire vehicle being stolen. The amount you pay depends on the vehicle you hire and where you hire it from. We offer a number of coverage packages to reduce your liability however, stay vigilant as you will not be covered should you leave your hire vehicle with the keys in it. While we try to provide our service to everyone who books a vehicle, there may be circumstances where we cannot give you a vehicle. Some of these scenarios are below:

  • If you did not satisfy the driving licence requirements: A valid driving licence must be provided. An international driving licence or an official English translation, by notary, of the driving licence must be provided if the driving licence was issued in a non-roman alphabet. Additionally, the driver must have held the licence for a minimum of one year, evidence is required to be provided to confirm this minimum duration. Please note that these minimum requirements could be longer for some of our special vehicles, such as our Prestige vehicles.
  • If you did not satisfy the identification/security check: you must provide the following documents: The payment card used to make the reservation (plus an additional card is required for certain vehicles), a photographic ID issued within the last 10 years, passports, photographic driving licences, national identity cards and government issued certificates are accepted, proof of address, a recent utility bill or bank statement (driving licences are not accepted as proof of address).
  • If you did not pass the DVLA's licence sharing check (UK)
  • If you had Insufficient funds for the pre-authorisation transaction to be processed
  • If you were not within the required age range for the vehicle type
  • If you have any unspent driving convictions
  • If you did not show up at the rental location to collect the vehicle per your reservation details
  • If you refuse to take the vehicle provided and would not accept a replacement vehicle.

It's easy to use a money off or upgrade voucher on your next rental. Simply present the voucher at collection of your next hire car and we'll take care of the rest. Vouchers are valid at all participating rental locations worldwide (listed on the voucher) for a period of 12 months from the date of issue and are pursuant to the terms listed on the vouchers themselves. An ACTO (Avis Company Travel Order) is a special voucher businesses give to staff so they can hire a vehicle with us. Simply show your ACTO, driving licence and company ID when you collect your hire vehicle and we’ll invoice your company directly. These vouchers can’t be used for online bookings.

You can either pay for your vehicle when you book online, or when you collect your hire vehicle. If you choose to pay when you book online, we’ll dip/swipe your card to gain authorisation. If you choose to pay at the station, we’ll dip/swipe your card to gain authorisation for the estimated full hire cost (including extras) but won’t take payment until you return your vehicle. If you have prepaid for your voucher directly with Avis, it's not a problem. You can still collect your hire car. Just be sure to bring all of the other required identification and documentation, including the credit card used to make your booking.

Usually you choose a car group, not a specific make or model. We'll show you an example from that group to give you a clear idea of the type of vehicle you will get.

However, if you hire one of our Prestige or Select Series Vehicles available in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France and Switzerland you can choose the exact make and model (not colour) at an extra cost. Your excess is your financial responsibility, or amount you would pay, in the event of damage or theft occurring to the vehicle. The amount you pay depends on the vehicle you hire, which country you hire it in and whether you choose to reduce the excess by upgrading your level of cover. When you hire a vehicle with us, you'll automatically receive third party, vehicle damage (Collision Damage Waiver) and vehicle theft cover to safeguard you on your journey. If you book on the US website you may find that vehicle damage and vehicle theft cover are not included, as some American credit cards provide insurance for car hire. Third party cover is the basic level you need to hire a vehicle, that's why we always include it. Should you damage another vehicle or passengers and their property, you won't have to pay for repairs or injuries. This is to help protect your child in a collision because normal seat belts are designed to fit adults in the stronger shoulder and hip areas. Very few insurance policies cover you to drive a hire car. Even if you can provide evidence that it does, unfortunately we won’t be able to reduce the amount you pay. This is because the rental agreement is between you and us, not us and your insurance company. Damage cover is included as standard with your rental. Should you have an accident, you will still need to pay a fixed (excess) fee unless you choose to upgrade your cover. However, you could choose to claim this back through your insurance company. At the start of your rental, we will ask your card issuer to hold a sum of money for us. This is a temporary hold against the funds you have available on that card. We do not charge your card and no money is taken from your account. Your card issuer will usually present this authorisation hold as a pending transaction that reduces the money you have available to spend. Further detail of this authorisation hold (also referred to as a pre-authorisation) is set out in the Location Specific Terms and Conditions for the country in which you are renting.

In summary, the authorisation hold will be for the estimated cost of your rental less any amount that you have paid in advance, plus 100$ converted to Danish Krone (for rentals in Denmark). When you complete your rental and return the vehicle, we will charge your card and the authorisation hold will be released by your card issuer. Depending on your card issuer, it can take up to 28 days before this is reflected in your account balance. As the authorisation hold has never been charged, the return of the funds will not be shown on your card statement. In case of any queries about the release of the authorisation hold, please contact your card issuer. Please note that even though the hold is not an actual charge, it will temporarily reduce the available balance on your payment card.

In France, with our “Meet & Greet” service, your car will be available at your arrival SNCF train station, even outside of the opening hours of your Avis station.

If the Avis office at the train station is closed when your train arrives, the rental agreement and the keys of your reserved vehicle will be handed to you by an SNCF agent (Offer valid until the closing time of the SNCF station).  As part of a partnership with SNCF, we offer this service for free for all reservations made through SNCF channels (oui.sncf or in SNCF stations). If your reservation was made outside an SNCF channel, this exclusive service is offered to you for only € 20.

RSN is our Roadside Safety Net product. In addition to the standard breakdown assistance included with your rental, our Roadside Assistance Plus (or Premium Roadside Assistance) service covers any non-mechanical issue you may face. This product removes ancillary costs that may be associated with a vehicle breakdown, such as jump starts or towing fees. Windscreen Protection reduces your windscreen excess to zero which means if there's new, non-negligent damage to the windscreen of the vehicle, you will pay a significantly reduced cost, if any cost at all. At the start of your rental, we will ask your card issuer to hold a sum of money for us. This is a temporary hold against the funds you have available on that card. We do not charge your card and no money is taken from your account. We know that our customers hire vehicles for many different reasons, and have many different refueling needs. For your convenience, we offer 4 different refueling options:

– Bring Back Full If you bring the vehicle back full, or at the same level as the vehicle was picked up at, there won't be any charge. If there happens to be any missing fuel at the start, and it isn't the same as your rental agreement, please let one of our staff know or take a picture if you are in a hurry.

– Fuel Up Front This option allows you to purchase a full tank of fuel at a lower price per litre than our Pay on Return rates. You pay one flat fee for any amount of fuel, so try to return it as close to empty as you can to get the best value. If the vehicle is returned full, we do not charge you for Fuel Up Front.

– EZ Fuel If you drive for 75 miles (120 km) or less you can pre-pay a flat fee and we will take care of refuelling. If you choose to refuel yourself, please keep the receipt and present it when you return the vehicle.

– Pay On Return If you don’t have the time to refuel and haven’t taken Fuel Up Front, we can do it for you. Please keep in mind that this will incur a small fee. Want some more information?

Whether you're hiring a car or van, you just need a clean driving licence that covers the vehicle you're hiring. Don't worry if you have points on your driving licence. You can still hire a car if you have six or less points. You must have held your driving licence for at least one year. If you drive your hire vehicle through Central London between 07:00 and 22:00, any day of the week, you pay a fixed fee each time you pass through a Congestion Charge zone. When you hire a car within the Congestion Charge zone in London, we can pay on your behalf for the first day of your hire. We understand you might get delayed, so we try to be flexible. If you’re running late or need to extend your car rental, please make sure you contact us as soon as possible. Should you return the vehicle late – without notifying us or extending your hire – you may be subject to a late return fee. If you fail to extend the rental and you are more than 29 minutes late returning the vehicle, your rental will be extended and you will be charged an extra day’s rental at current pay at location prices plus a late return processing fee for each day or part of a day until the vehicle is returned.

If you overrun past your agreed return date and time, you will incur a late return fee. If you still haven’t returned the vehicle 24 hours later, then another late return fee will be applied. A late return fee will continue to be added every 24 hour period thereafter, until you return the vehicle to the rental station.
Depending on the country of rental, the daily late return fee will be: £15.00/CHF 20.00/150.00 (DKR, NKR or SKR)/between €15 and €18.60 (country dependent), or the equivalent amount in local currency.

Yes. You can pay using Visa and MasterCard debit cards. There are a few exceptions: One credit card and one debit card may be required at the counter for higher-value vehicles. The Maestro card is only accepted in Germany. PREPAID cards are accepted online however they are not accepted at the counter which means a non-PREPAID card must be shown at the rental station (together with the PREPAID card). A PREPAID card can be used to pay for the rental at the end of the vehicle hire. Please refer to our location specific terms and conditions for additional information on payment options. Remember, the name on the card must match the driving licence of the main driver. Someone else can't pay on your behalf. And don't forget to bring your payment card when you collect your rental.

Once you bring the vehicle back, the reversal process starts automatically and your bank is notified that the funds should be released. The funds should be available within a maximum of 28 days of the date/time that your rental was checked in. Unfortunately, we only have access to trigger the release of funds and have no control regarding the time taken for your bank to return the funds to your account. The charge is usually taken in one payment but multiple charges/receipts are also possible based upon the location and duration of the rental.

When a traffic offence occurs, we are notified by the relevant authorities as the registered owner of the vehicle in order to identify the driver of the vehicle. Whenever possible, liability is transferred to the driver of the vehicle at the time of the offence and the authorities re-issue the Penalty/Parking Charge Notice to the driver. We charge an administration fee to cover our costs involved in this process. Following a liability transfer, the authorities contact the driver directly by post with the re-issued fine. Rest assured, the dates of fine payment are updated so that the driver is not affected by the time taken to transfer liability. In some circumstances, liability cannot be transferred and the fine is paid on your behalf by us. The lowest possible fine amount is paid and is charged directly to the customer. Please note, to dispute an offence, the authorities must be contacted directly. Details of the dispute process and all contact details for the authority will be detailed on the re-issued penalty charge notice that you will receive.

Need a new Avis Preferred card? We no longer issue plastic cards but Avis Preferred cards can be downloaded digitally and saved to the wallet on your smartphone by following these steps:

1. Visit our Avis Preferred Card page

2. Enter your Avis Preferred customer number and surname

3. Select the correct language

4. Click ‘create card’

5. You will receive an e-mail to the address registered to your account

6. Download the e-card to your wallet. Instructions are provided based on the operating system of your device.

We understand your hire car might get dirty during your journey so we don't charge a cleaning fee for normal wear and tear. We will only charge a cleaning fee if the vehicle requires additional professional cleaning outside of standard cleaning procedures.

We want you to enjoy every mile of your journey so we always try to be as flexible as we can. That's why you can book a one-way trip for national, inter-regional and cross-continental trips.

We recommend returning your car to the same pick-up location because dropping it somewhere else will cost more. Don't worry. Any extra cost will be included in your booking fee, so you know upfront, however, any changes to your original booking could result in additional costs.

As part of the global effort to help curb the spread of Coronavirus, recent government restrictions, etc. have resulted in us closing some of our rental stations. These changes are reflected in our booking channels. In the unlikely event that a rental station closes while booking, you will be contacted and assisted by our team.


Booking confirmation didn’t make its way to your e-mail address? No problem! Make sure to check your spam folder first because they sometimes end up there. If you still can’t find your booking confirmation, or you’ve input the wrong e-mail address when making your booking, please contact our reservations team.

You pay for each day you hire a vehicle, which is based on a 24 hour rental period. If you return your hire vehicle within 24 hours, you'll still be charged for the full day. There's also no penalty for returning your vehicle up to 29 minutes late, but for returns after this time we're afraid you will be charged for another day as well as a late return fee. If you are going to be late or would like to extend your rental period, please call your hire station ahead of time to let us know.

Sorry to hear your journey wasn't perfect. If you feel we did not provide the service you deserve, we want to know about it so we can make it better.  You may contact our customer care team through telephone or email by using the icons below.
 


Invoices can be downloaded directly from our website 36 hours after the rental has ended. Before you start, please make sure you have either your reservation or rental agreement number to hand. When you sign up for an online Avis or Avis Preferred account, you are given the option to opt out of receiving invoices by email. If you tick this box, your invoice will be sent to you by post a few working days after your journey.

We offer Rapid Return in over 125 Avis locations across Europe and will hand you a receipt with all the rental charges including mileage and fuel as soon as you return your hire vehicle. Once received, if you need any further explanation of any of the charges on your invoice, our Avis invoice explainer breaks down what the charges on your invoice all refer to. If you haven't received your invoice, or need an extra copy, simply request it online.
